My

STORY

SEEMA GARG MURTHY

I spent the first 23 years of my life in the same city, and the same house in a small town in Madhya Pradesh, India.  After college, I took a job as a school teacher and later as a college instructor.  When I migrated to USA in the mid 80s, my Masters in Sociology was not good enough to get an office or school job due to negligible spoken English and zero technical skills.  I started with a minimum wage job at McDonalds which paid $3.15 per hour.  Lots of hard work and learning for a few years put me on a different career path: law which I love to this date. My experience spans over 30 years in multinational corporations, law firms, tech companies with a focus on commercial law, contracts, and litigation.

With God’s grace, I got married in 1993 and am mother of two beautiful, intelligent daughters.  Over three decades, I realized the challenges of raising children in a different cultural environment requiring ongoing learning and efforts to adjust to local culture and lifestyle.

While assimilation with local culture and community is important, it doesn’t need to be done at the cost of giving up your own heritage culture, language, food, attire, and traditions.

Disha4Dharmic Samaj’s various programs (Hindi Language classes, Hindu Culture & Religion classes, Lunch & Learn about Heritage, Yoga for Diabetes, Jeevansathi, You are My family) is a humble attempt to help Dharmic diaspora families living in America to make a difference in their lives.
